Although this isn't the best time of year to start new hives, we have 7 late starts which would bring us to 42 hives if they succeed. In late July, we put new queens into these starts (called nucs) and they will have gone on their mating flight shortly thereafter. By Mid-August, we should be be to judge the queen's laying abilities: if she is good and strong, or weak. If she's weak, we'll combine the hive with a stronger one so they can survive the winter.
